Catalogue Note

This portrait derives from a Portrait of Robert Allan, painted by Raeburn in 1800, in which the subject is depicted sitting in an armchair and holding a paper in his hand.  That portrait is now in the collection of the Tyne & Wear Archives and Museums (Laing Art Gallery, Newcastle).  Robert Allan was a prominent Scottish banker.
