Catalogue Note

These small panels are identical in style, dimension, and subject matter to two other depictions of Franciscan monks, Franciscan Monk Reading1 and Franciscan Monk at Prayer 2, published in 1997 in the Vittore Crivelli monograph as by Crivelli (see, S. Papetti, et. al., Vittore Crivelli, e la Pittura del suo Tempo nel Fermano, Milan 1997, p. 221, cat. nos. 29 and 30).  All four panels - the present pair and the aforementioned published pair - were all clearly originally part of the same altarpiece.

1 Formerly in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, deaccessioned by them and sold, New York, Sotheby's March 15, 1974, lot 76, as attributed to Crivelli.

2 Now in the Palazzo Comunale, Sant'Elpidio a Mare.
