Catalogue Note

This painting is part of a famous series by Teniers of paintings he copied from the collection of Archduke Leopold-Wilhelm, Governor of the Netherlands from 1646-1656.  Teniers was appointed court painter to the Archduke and was assigned the project of publishing a catalogue of engravings after the paintings in his collection.  The present work would have served as a modello for the engravers.  The engravings were published in 1660 in the Theatrum pictorium Davidis Teniers.  The painting by Polidoro di Lanciano (previously ascribed to Titian) is today in the collection of the Szépmüveszéti Museum, Budapest.
