Catalogue Note
Two poems from Celan's 1955 collection Von Schwelle zu Schwelle.
The manuscripts of these poems were given to the later German publisher and translator Christoph Graf von Schwerin (1933-1996) as a Christmas present in 1954. Schwerin, whose father had been executed following the unsuccessful attempt on Hitler's life on 20 July 1944, had visited Celan in 1954, and became for a period in the following year his faithful secretary.
