Condition

The following condition report has been prepared by Stuart Sanderson, Paintings Conservation, 69 Rylett Crescent London, W12 9RP: The painting is basically in good condition. The painting has been removed from its original stretcher and stapled to a piece of ply. At the very edge where the paint is thick, there is some cracking and minor loss. There are numerous pin holes along the edge as if it had been pinned to the board from the front. Bordering the edges is a 3cm strip of discolouration. Other small areas of discolouration are caused by bleeding through from underlying paint layers. There were areas in the blue form in the centre where there is fine cracking and the paint was lifting; this I consolidated in situ. The paint is now secure, though the slightly lifting cracks might be improved with a further more thorough treatment. There are some old retouched fillings in this blue area. The painting is unvarnished, and appears to have a thin layer of surface dirt. Please telephone the department on 0207 293 6424 if you have any questions regarding the present work.
