Catalogue Note

Although this 'river' design was one Cardew used frequently during his time in Africa, the present plate, made during the 1926-42 period at Winchcombe Pottery (the colouring of the glazes suggests a date of execution in the mid to late 1930s), seems to be an early example of his use of the pattern. For comparable plates from the Aduja period, see Sarah Riddick, Pioneer Studio Pottery: The Milner-White Collection, London, Lund Humphries, 1990, cat. nos.11 & 12.
