Woodcut printed in black, blue, ochre and green, the colours applied in the manner of a monotype, a strong impression, the colours fresh, 1919, the third (final) state after the correction of the blank spots on the forehead, a proof (aside from the published edition by J.B. Neumann, Berlin), signed and dated 19 in pencil (the '19' possibly retraced)

Condition

With margins, a tiny abrasion in the forehead, touched in with white at the lower border, the upper margin and occasionally at the edges, minor foxing, rubbing and slight discoloration in the margins, an unobstrusive hairline vertical pressure mark at lower left of image, laid down, framed.

Heckel's striking self-portrait is an icon of German Expressionist art and one of his most important prints. This poignant work represents the artist's personal turmoil and reflects a general depression in the aftermath of the First World War.
