Condition

This work is painted on masonite and is evenly varnished. What appear to be very small puncture holes in the mango in the basket and in the sleeve of the girl's shirt may potentially be the inherent texture of the masonite. Minor areas of paint loss are visible in the lower right quadrant, specifically the edge of the girl's shirt sleeve. Under ultraviolet inspection, a one-inch line of in-painting, extending from the bottom of the girl's shirt, is visible in the lower right quadrant. Overall, this work is in excellent condition.

Catalogue Note

" Although many Mexican artists have taken the Indian and the indigenous culture as subject and symbol, Ramos Martínez has projected the most intense and concentrated image. Mexicanidad was the icon of this artist."

George Raphael Small, Ramos Martínez, His Life and Art, California, 1975, p. 143
