Catalogue Note

By 1956, María Luisa Pacheco earned three Guggenheim Fellowships for her pioneering abstractions based on the magnificent landscape and peaks of the Bolivain Andes and Altiplano. A one-person exhibition at the OAS in Washington in 1958 encouraged her to move to New York. Pacheco married Fred Bernard. His collection is a snap shot of early organic abstraction in Latin America.
