Condition

Board is stable. Minor damage to the upper part of cradle, visible on the reverse. Under UV light: numerous pin-dot retouches scattered throughout the upper register of the composition, mostly in areas of light pigment. Larger strokes of retouching are evident about six inches to the left of the center of the composition near the base of the fountain. Additionally, scattered pin-dot retouches are apparent in the faces and chests of the two figures at the left. Several small strokes are visible at the center of the canvas's bottom edge. Apart from a few other spots of retouching, the work is in generally good condition.

The present work is a study for the large painting of the same title currently in the Hôtel Fujiya, Hakone, Japan. In 1930, Denis collaborated with the Gobelins to produce a tapestry based on the large painting.
