Condition

This painting is not significantly dirty but a layer of old varnish is still present on the surface. The painting has recently been lightly cleaned and some of the retouches have been adjusted. There is a recorded previous size for the painting which has resulted in three folds in the canvas, one running horizontally approximately 1 ½ inches from the bottom edge, another running vertically down the right side approximately 1 ½ inches from the right edge, and the last running across the top approximately 1 ½ inches from the top edge. There is a small amount of retouching associated with these folds, most noticeable across the bottom edge and in the lower right corner. Additionally, there is one other horizontal restoration which is visible under ultraviolet light in the upper left in the dark shape entering into the sky. These restorations are almost entirely the result of a previous edited composition which was done with the artist’s approval, and other than this, the painting is in beautiful condition and will respond to cleaning if desired. The above condition report has been provided by Simon Parkes of Simon Parkes Art Conservation, Inc. 502 East 74th St. New York, NY 212-734-3920, simonparkes@msn.com , an independent restorer who is not an employee of Sotheby's.
