Condition
Executed on paper mounted on canvas as part of the artist's original preparation. A watermark in the paper is faintly visible near the upper left corner. There is some minor surface dirt and a few spots of varnish loss visible in raking light. Under UV light: There are a few small strokes of inpainting in the figure's hat, just above his ear, and one small stroke at the right edge of the figure's forehead. There is one small spot approximately one inch to the right of the figure's right eye. There is also a hairline stroke of inpainting near the lower left corner and a dot of retouching two inches above this, near the figure's shoulder. Otherwise fine, the work is in very good condition.

Catalogue Note
Rouault often depicted himself as a clown and a comparison of the present work with known self-portraits (see fig. 1), especially the shape of the ear and the sitter's gaze, suggests that the artist may have incorporated his own likeness here.
