Catalogue Note
Executed circa 1895, this work is the study for the figure of Oedipus which Renoir incorporated into three larger oils of the same subject and date. The oils formed part of a major decorative project (never realized) illustrating the classical story of Oedipus and Jocasta that was commissioned from the artist by his friend Paul Gallimard, the owner of the Théatre de Variétés in Paris.
