Condition
The present work is a hand painted cast ceramic tile. Inscriptions on the front and reverse are inherent to the cast. Surface is dirty overall, particularly in the in the incised grooves and the unpainted areas of the tile appear somewhat time-stained. There are a few scattered surface stains visible. The tile itself is sound and no cracks or repairs are visible. The work is in good condition.

Catalogue Note
The present work was commissioned by Yvette Guilbert in 1895 as a tile to top her tea table. After Lautrec presented her with the original design, Yvette Guilbert added the humourous inscription which appears in the lower left corner. Lautrec had Emile Muller produce 12 examples and hand painted each one so that no two tiles are alike.
