Condition

Striking, but not going, going train is fully wound, the quality of the figure is finely modelled with rubbing to the gilding some rubbing to orb, gilding to ground is probably renewed, the movement is largely original however several holes are evident indicating some alteration, for example regulation which may have been hogs bristle is lacking, the globe is secured by a washer which must be a later replacement, the Christ figures missing half a finger, some old fractures casting flaws. The quarter striking dial would have been enamelled; now only very slight traces remain. Otherwise a strong piece. Service is recommended.

Catalogue Note

Zacharias Erb is listed in Abeler, Meister Der Urmacherkunst as working in Vienna at the beginning of the 17th century. The entry mentions a clock titled 'Christus an Matersaüle' exhibited in Staten Island in 1959 and is most likely the present lot.

The figure of Christ standing next to the Column is likely inspired by the school of Adrian de Vries. For further discussion on this reference see Maurice and Mayr, The Clockwork Universe, p. 238.
