Catalogue Note
The present pair, which are known in several casts, were inspired by statuary at Versailles: the female figure derives directly from an antique Vestal there and the male is loosely based upon two herms representing Hippocrates and Diogenes. Bronze reductions of the ancient and modern sculpture in the gardens at Versailles were produced in France as decorative mementos.
