Catalogue Note

The lifelike polychrome wood sculpture pioneered by artists such as Juan Martínez Montañés, Juan de Mesa, and Pedro Roldán dominated sculpture in Spain and her American colonies during the Baroque period and later.  The present figure is of a popular type of the standing nude Christ Child produced for use in Eucharistic processions and private devotion.
