Condition

Overall surface abrasions, losses, flaking paint, and worming. Some cracks include vertical crack to left end of tomb and horizontal cracks on the right end of tomb. Crack along base through bottom part of two soldiers on lower right (with some worm damage). Losses include: Christ's lower arms, one arm of soldier to Christ's proper left, areas along righthand side of relief, some areas along bottom. Ground on right two-thirds of relief is a replacement. Due to worm damage and cracks back has a large area filled with glue and wood fill. Other restorations and fill throughout. Areas of refreshed paint throughout. Well carved.

Catalogue Note

Although the the Resurrection is not described in the Gospels it is frequently seen in art illustrating the life of Christ.  As the soldiers guarding the tomb sleep, an angel pulls aside the lid of the tomb and the resurrected Jesus strides boldly forth.
