Catalogue Note

The appearance of Christ's ribs revealed beneath the skin, the contraction of His abdominal muscles and the gentle torsion of His body, echoing the corpora of Giambologna, contribute to this moving composition.  Such meticulous depiction of anatomical detail was evident in Donatello's early work and continued in Tuscany into the 16th century.

The heavy swathe of drapery hanging far down Christ's right thigh and the parallel lines of the ropes that fasten the perizonium to the waist are unusual features.
