Condition

Surface abrasions and rubbing throughout. Some pitting and casting flaws. Remnants of sprues. some verdegris and dirt. Remains of dark brown lacquer.

Catalogue Note

Padua, with its famous university, was the center of scientific exploration around 1500.  Small bronzes of crustaceans, shells, small reptiles and amphibians, which were sometimes cast from nature, had intellectual appeal as natural specimens and were often destined for the Wunderkammer of scholarly collectors.
