Condition

Surfaces rubbed and mottled. Dents and surface abrasions throughout. Threaded holes at the back of each for attachment (probably original). Original casting flaws, particularly to undersides. Verdegris, particularly around eyes and front paws. Thickly cast, with remnants of core and wire inside.

Catalogue Note

The present pair of lions sejant were probably originally feet for a lectern, paschal candelabrum, or a baptismal font (see Theuerkauff-Liederwald, op. cit., p. 123, fig. 9).  For an almost identical third lion, possibly from the same original scheme, see Sotheby's Amsterdam, September 30, 2008, lot 481.  Another lion sejant illustrated in Theuerkauff-Liederwald (op. cit., p. 289, fig. 46), a support for a paschal candelabrum by Renier van Thienen of 1482/83, is similar in the shape of the body and the treatment of the eyes and nostrils.
