Catalogue Note
The stylistic roots of the present figure originate in 12th and 13th century Venetian sculpture found on the portals of churches and as support figures or within niches on tombs. The specific style of the drapery beautifully carved with multiple v-shaped folds, the frontal position and blank stare with almond-shaped eyes as well as the large and stylized hands and feet are characteristic of Venetian Gothic sculpture. Compare the figures of Christ and the Madonna on the tomb of Jacopo Salomone (Wolters, op.cit., figs. 107-110) as well as the figures of saints surmounting the pilasters in the Basilica at Aquileia, 1360-70s (Wolters, op.cit., nos. 367 and 368).
