Description

  • Clara Peeters
  • A Grasshopper Beside a Roemer: A Fragment
  • oil on panel

Provenance

With the Norton Galleries, from whom acquired by Mr. and Mrs. Noah and Muriel Butkin, in 1968 (as Bosschaert);
By whom bequeathed to the Cleveland Museum of Art (The Muriel Butkin Bequest), in 2008, but never accessioned.

Condition

This work is a fragment. The panel is uncradled and slightly bowed from left to right. The bow is more pronounced at the upper edge. The paint surface is stable and in good state. There are a few discolored touches in the lower left corner. There is an incised perspective line that goes from the lower right, through the base of the roemer and extends up diagonally to the left. Under UV, there is a thick, milky varnish that obscures the surface; however, there is very little evidence of any retouching aside from the spots in the lower left. In an elaborately carved wood frame.
