Condition

The following condition report has been provided by Simon Parkes of Simon Parkes Art Conservation, Inc. 502 East 74th St. New York, NY 212-734-3920, simonparkes@msn.com , an independent restorer who is not an employee of Sotheby's. This painting has a fairly old lining but the paint layer itself may have been cleaned more recently and at that time it was varnished. The condition is uneven at best and despite the fact that retouches are not visible under ultraviolet light, it is clearly evident that there has been abrasion, not only in the background but in the remainder of the picture, including the figure.
