oil on panel
Condition
Panel is cradled. there is a vertical join running from top to bottom at center which has separated (this is visible in catalogue image). under a dirty and uneven varnish. the paint surface has been generally very well retained and there is nice detail in figures, landscape and architecture. colors remain strong. a heavy-ish craquelure can be seen in the foliage behind and to right of St. Anne. another vertical crack or join runs along far left side and is slightly visible to naked eye. ultraviolet light reveals retouching at left side along upper part of crack/join and some at center left. retouching can be seen in Virgin's hair, a few in her face and costume; only very few on Christ child and St. Anne. others in left foreground and at lower right corner, and only a few very small retouches in sky and architecture. painting has not been attended to in a long time and would benefit from sensitive restoration.
In a black wood frame with some decorative carving at inner rim and outer edge.
