14 Karat Gold and Hardstone Cameo Parure, Retailed by Tiffany & Co., Circa 1860

  • 14 karat gold, hardstone, parure
Comprising a bracelet, pair of earrings, and two brooches, each set with a carved hardstone cameo depicting Madonna; length of bracelet 6½ inches, inscribed 'August 12, 1864' and monogram of initials MPL; the earrings with later added posts; and the bar pin converted from a pair of cuff buttons.   With fitted box stamped Tiffany & Co., 550 Broadway 552, New York, the outside of the box surmounted by an openwork metal monogram with the intertwined initials MPL, accented by a foliate pattern. 

Condition

Beautiful, lifelike carving work. One cameo on an earring with chipped nose, cameos depth ¾ inch. Currently fitted with threaded posts and earnuts. The original screwbacks for the earrings included. All pieces in good condition unless otherwise noted. The interior of the box stamped Tiffany & Co. 550 Broadway 552 New York. Also handwritten in permanent ink "given me when Charlie was born by my precious husband." and on velvet lining underneath bracelet "August 12th 1864". The exterior of the box is spotted and and soiled and the flocking has rubbed off in many places. The appraiser of the Antique Roadshow Peter Shemonsky appraised the parure at $25,000-35,000 for insurance purposes.

Catalogue Note

The parure was featured in Antiques Roadshow, Episode #1504, San Diego, California, June 12, 2010.  According to the family history, the parure belonged to the great-great grandmother of the consignor's father-in-law; given to her on the birth of her first child 'Charlie' in 1864.
