Description

- 28cm, 11in diameter
painted with a central polychrome armorial for Bellacci of Florence, within simple bianco-sopra-bianco borders and bands of alla porcellana flowers in blue, the reverse with the so-called 'casa pirota' mark among squiggles and lines
Catalogue Note
The maiolica with this circular mark is still attributed to Faenza, though the idea that it is associated with the Casa Pirota is discredited. An attribution to the Dalla Palle workshop is now thought likely, on similar punning grounds, though it is interesting to see other parallels to this piece, such as a Deruta dish illustrated by Julia Poole, Italian Maiolica...in the Fitzwilliam Museum Cambridge, no.266.
