Catalogue Note

This tureen derives from the designs of Jean-Guillaume Moitte, as executed by the Parisian goldsmith Henry Auguste.  William Beckford, the Duke of York, and the Neopolitan ambassador all brought Auguste silver to London, and there is evidence the Duke of York's service was extended by English goldsmiths, who could then repeat these French models for other clients.
