Catalogue Note
All that is known about Samuel Barrow is an advertisement in the Pennsylvania Chronicle on October 7, 1771 where he states "Samuel Barrow, clock and Watch-Maker, From London, who came over in the Betsey, Captain Brown, from Liverpool, has set up a complete shop, well furnished with materials for his business, in Chestnut street, on the south side, betwixt Second and Front streets, Where he makes, sells and repairs all sorts of repeating, horizontal, seconds or stop and plain watches and clocks of all kinds, according to the newest and most approved methods for exact keeping of time. As he has been some years under the instruction, and wrought for most of the principal watch and clock makers in London, particularly the famous Mr. John Harrison, who made the noted time-piece, he makes no doubt of giving satisfaction to all of his employers, by making, finishing and repairing in this city, all kinds of work in his way, in the very best and neatest manner, and on the very lowest terms such work can be performed."
