Description

  • one ring hallmarked London, 1813.  Together with a silver seal with double stirrup-shaped mount carved with the Fanning arms, circa 1770, 5 pieces

  • Gold
the oval seals with openwork superstructures, one with carnelian matrix carved with the Fanning arms, the other with agate matrix carved with monogram EF below Fanning crest, one gold ring enclosing hair within black enamel border inscribed FA Fanning OB: 22 Sep: 1812 aet 23, the other with identical inscription and monogram FAF in champlevé black enamel



Ring with label that states "Memorial rings for Capt. Frederick Augustus Fanning only son of Gen. Fanning."  Seals with early label stating "Fanning seal belonging to Gen. Fanning"

Provenance

The initials EF on one seal matrix are probably that of General Edmund Fanning, Governor of Prince Edward Island 1786-1805.  The mourning rings are stated to commemorate the death of Captain Frederick Augustus Fanning, only son of General Fanning.  For additional lots from the Fanning family please see lots 107 and 108.
