Catalogue Note

A member of the postwar European Zero Group, Günther Uecker creates paintings that are studded with fields of nails arranged in concentric circles. As the spikes become denser at the center, they create a whirling vortex. This work reflects Uecker's fascination with eastern philosophies and their associated rituals. Two mandala-like circles evoke the cosmos, while the play of light and shadow across the contrasting panels enhances the celestial associations.
