  • 48.5cm. 19in.high without glass dome
the shaped giltwood base containing the bell striking movement with later conversion to cylinder platform escapement, the frontplate with Brevete d'Invention  stamp and numbered 35, a gilt-mounted glass column supporting the 4½-inch glass dial, signed to the centre Robert Houdin A Paris, the single hour hand revolving without apparent connection to the movement, on an ebonised plinth with glass dome

Condition

Dial and hand in good condition. Movement would benefit from a clean but was running at time of cataloguing, later conversion to cylinder platform escapement. Ormolu in good condition, giltwood base has been re-gilded, ebonised plinth and dome possibly replaced. With winder and time set key.

Catalogue Note

Jean Eugène Robert-Houdin (1805-1871) was a remarkable man, a magician, a scientist and an inventor. He devised a number of mystery clocks, the present example is from his third series.
