Catalogue Note
Thomas Townshend (1732-1800) was Secretary for War in 1782 and shortly afterwards Home Secretary, during which time he was created a baron. Wraxall in Hist. and Post. Memoirs remarks that he 'excelled himself in his defence of peace [with the American colonies] , and may really be said to have in some measure earned on that night [17 Feb 1783] the peerage which he soon afterwards obtained.' He was finally created Viscount Sydney of St Leonards in June 1789 and his title furnished the name for the Capital of New South Wales.
