the dishes engraved with a coat-of-arms and supporters below a baron's coronet, domed covers similarly engraved on either side

Condition

Overall condition of dishes, covers and marks is good, dishes have multiple knife-cuts in the interiors; the arms are probably circa 1838 (see lot 428, a pair of Victorian entrée dishes and covers, Garrard, 1838, with the same arms and style of engraving). The dishes with scratch weights: 'N1 41"14,' 'N2 42"5,' 'N3 43"2' and 'N4 43"10,' the covers numbered 1 to 4, overall good. Catalogue Note

The arms are those of Smith quartering Carrington for Robert John Smith (afterwards Carrington), 2nd Baron Carrington of Upton, Nottinghamshire, who succeeded to the title upon the death of his father on 18 September 1838. Born on 16 January 1796, the only son and heir of Robert Smith, 1st Baron Carrington by his first wife, Anne, first daughter of Lewyns Boldero-Barnard of Cave Castle, Yorkshire, he was educated at Christ's College, Cambridge. He was MP for Wendover from 1818 to 1820, for Bucks from 1820 to 1831 and for High Wycombe from 1831 to 1838. He died in 1868 when he was was succeeded by his son and heir, Charles Robert, by his second wife.
