Description

the flower engraved dial plate with 6-inch chapter ring and signed Thomas Loomes at the Mare Made In Lothbury, Londini Fecit, alarm disc lacking, the conventional posted movement with verge escapement and short pendulum converted from balance wheel, outside count wheel striking on the top-mounted bell, formerly with alarm train mounted on the iron backplate, the conventional posted case with dolphin frets, turned finials and ball feet

Condition

Dial in generally good condition, lacking alarm disc, unusual hour hand is almost certainly replaced. Movement needs a clean and has conversion to short pendulum, alarm train lacking. Case is lacking side doors, top finial sawn off, otherwise generally good condition. No weights.

Catalogue Note

Thomas Loomes was apprenticed to John Selwood and became Free of the Clockmakers' Company in 1649.  He worked at the Mermaid in Lothbury where he succeeded Selwood in 1651 and was a partner with Ahasuerus Fromanteel from 1658. It is believed that he died in the plague in 1665.
