Catalogue Note
Comparative Literature:
J. F. Da Silva Nascimento, Leitos e Camilhas Portugueses, Lisbon, 1950, figs. 17, 19 and 21, illustrates various related examples of Portuguese beds with similar turned and carved decoration.
This type of bed takes its inspiration with its intricate carving from the Moors and in the 17th century, the turning and carving became more elaborate as on the offered example. Several examples of these type of beds carved in a similar vein, are illustrated in the guide to the Museu-Escola de Artes Decorativeas Portuguesas, Lisbon, 2001, pp. 234-235.
