Condition

In overall good restored condition. The interior of the carcass and the drawer linings have been stained red. The cornice shows evidence of old worm and there are some losses internally to it but it would appear to be no longer active. There are old marks and scratches to the veneer commensurate with age and use and hairline cracks in the ebony veneer and some localised areas of repair to this finish. There are no keys. Some minor losses and flaking to painted panels. The following panels have a break across them: Bottom drawer right hand panel; also third drawer down right side of the cabinet-left hand panel which depicts a mythological scene is not stylistically in keeping with the rest of the Roman scenes and may well be a replacement; the right panel on the same drawer has some repainting to the figure and the sky. Evidence of previous mounts on the blocks beneath the pediment. There may well have been another painted panel on the drawer above the broken pediment but one cannot say for certain. The knobs on the drawers have been regilt and the lockplates may well have been changed. The piece is rare as normally the painted panels are of mythological or religious scenes.
