Description

  • Porcelain
  • 19cm, 7 ½in
of slender baluster shape and fluted oval section, decorated in famille rose style with an elongated figure standing by a tall parasol in a garden, a further vignette with a small child chasing butterflies to the reverse, formal borders at the neck and above the footrim, ( small chips)

Condition

There is a chip to the rim of the neck measuring approximately 3mm wide on the exterior of the vase and 10mm to the interior of the rim. To the rear of the vase there is a chip to the footrim. This is partially glazed so it probably occurred during manufacture. It measures approximately 4mm high by 5mm wide. There is a little light fire-specking to the glaze to the lower left side of the main decoration. This vase probably originally had a cover which is now lacking.

Catalogue Note

A tall solitary Chinese figure standing in a garden is often referred to as 'Long Eliza', after a corruption of the Dutch lange lijzen (tall lady).  They are found on Worcester with polychrome decoration from about 1752.   An octagonal teabowl and saucer decorated with a similar small child and Chinese figure was in the The Crane Collection, sold Bonhams, 31st March 2010, lot 56.   A vase of similar shape also decorated with a tall figure, although this one is holding a parasol rather than standing next to one, is illustrated in Coloured Worcester Porcelain by H. Rissik Marshall (1954), plate 25, no. 579.
