A PAIR OF GREEN-GLAZED SAUCER DISHES YONGZHENG MARKS AND PERIOD

each with shallow rounded sides rising from a short straight foot to an everted rim, the exterior finely incised with pomegranates borne on undulating stems with feathery leaves, applied overall with a rich green glaze with a slightly iridescent sheen and leaving the base glazed white, the base inscribed with a six-character Yongzheng mark within a double circle

Condition

One dish has a hairline measuring 2cm running vertically along the side from the rim which is also visible from the exterior. The exterior has a 3cm glaze scratch running horizontally across the incised decoration near the hairline. There is a circa 0.4cm black mark running horizontally near the rim and extensive surface scratchings with the longest measuring circa 2cm. The interior has a burst glaze bubble and several iron spots in the well. The base has three burst glaze bubbles and the footring has traces of kiln grit adhered to it. The other dish has a 0.5cm crack with associated hairline at the rim, the rim also has a circa 1.5cm glaze scratch running along it. The interior has several minute burst glaze bubble and extensive iron spots (the largest measuring 0.2 x 0.1cm) to the well. The green glaze is rubbed in places as evident in several irregular patches to the interior (the largest measuring circa 3 x 0.5cm). The exterior has a circa 0.5cm scratch to the body beneath the glaze. There are extensive burst glaze bubbles on the base and numerous surface scratchings across the dish.

Dishes of this type are more commonly found incised with the bajixiang (Eight Buddhist Emblems) on the exterior; for example see a dish of this size and glaze from the H.M.
