Description

the bearded old man depicted with a gentle expression, carrying a fisherman's hat at the back, clasping a gnarled wood stave entwined with a twisted rope leading to a basket in front with a leaping carp, beside him a cheerful boy holding another carp in his hands and looking up to the sage, large lotus leaves issuing from the bottom round the back of the figures, the translucent amber of an even red orange tone, with silver-inlaid wood stand

Condition

The tip of the stave held in the fisherman's hand has a circa 0.4 x 0.2cm area which could possibly be chipped and recarved. There are other nicks (the largest measuring circa 0.8 x 0.2cm) to the extremities of the carving including the ribbon from the fisherman's hair, the fingers and toes of the boy and the edges of the lotus leaves . A 2.5 x 0.3cm area of the base is also chipped and lost. The amber is of a brighter reddish tone compared to the catalogue illustration.
