A LARGE BLUE AND WHITE ROULEAU VASE QING DYNASTY, KANGXI PERIOD

Description

  • porcelain painted in underglaze cobalt-blue
the cylindrical body finely painted in bright cobalt-blue tones with a continuous scene of scholars and attendants set in a mountainous riverscape with large pavilions, all below a band of ruyi heads and swirls at the shoulder, the neck collared with layered bands of ruyi heads, plantain leaves, keyfret border, trellis pattern, swirl band and a shan border between two rows of small circles, the lip encircled with a trellis border

Condition

There is a long vertical crack running along one side of the vase from below the shoulder to the base with associated flakes, and another circa 4cm vertical glaze scratch running along the other side of the vase. There is also other minor surface scratchings and glaze firing imperfections such as pinprick burst glaze bubbles and iron spots.

Honey, A Guide to the Later Chinese Porcelain, London, 1927, pl. 31; a pair from the Bahr collection is included in A.W. Bahr, Old Chinese Porcelain and Works of Art in China, London, 1911, pl. LVIII; and a single vase was sold in these rooms, 11th December 1992, lot 305.
