A HARDSTONE-INLAID AND LACQUERED BAMBOO INCENSE HOLDER 17TH/18TH CENTURY

Estimate
3,000 - 5,000 GBP
bidding is closed

Description

  • lacquered bamboo inlaid with coral, agate, stained ivory, mother-of-pearl
of slender cylindrical form raised on three legs, inlaid in coral, mother-of-pearl, agate and stained ivory with two butterflies hovering above leafy branches of peony and pomegranate, the bamboo covered in a layer of lacquer of dark chocolate tone

Condition

The lacquer over the bamboo is worn and possibly re-painted around the rim and the feet. There are chips along the rim and base (the largest measuring circa 0.4 x 0.1cm), and four hairline age cracks running vertically down the rim (the longest measuring 4.5cm). A section of the pomegranate branch (1.5cm) and a 0.4 x 0.3cm area on the peony branch might have been lost and re-applied, as seen in the discontinuation of the colour.
