Description

  • bamboo
of cylindrical form, carved and reticulated in varying depths of relief with a seated lady reading in front of a table with scholar's objects and an attendant standing beside her, all amongst gnarled pine and jagged rocks, fitted with wood terminals pierced and carved with peach branches framed by a keyfret border, the bamboo patinated to a golden brown tone

Condition

There are vertical age cracks at the top and bottom of the incense holder, the longest measuring circa 2.5cm. Areas on the extremities of the carving including the rocky face at the bottom (0.6 x 0.3cm), leafy tips and small tree twigs are lost. The edges of the carved wood terminals are extensively nibbled.
