A CARVED CINNABAR LACQUER BOX AND COVER QING DYNASTY, 18TH CENTURY

Description

  • red cinnabar lacquer
of cylindrical form, the flat cover carved in relief with two bearded sages seated at a table beside a standing acolyte, all set in a landscape with a swaying pine tree, wutong shrubs and jagged rocks, the sides covered with a dense wan-diaper ground, the interior and the base lacquered black

Condition

The cover has a wide U-shaped crack (6cm) and an L-shaped crack (3cm) to one side with associated lost and loose lacquer. There are numbers shorter cracks to the top and running along the edges. The rims have extensive areas of loss and damage. The surface has minor scratchings, particularly evident in the black lacquer. The underside of the cover with an old sticker.
