Description

  • ivory
of rectangular form, the cover carved in relief with a procession of equestrian figures followed by armed soldiers or attendants carrying various tributes and possessions amongst a dense composition of trees and jagged mountains, all bordered by a floret band, the side of the box similarly decorated with further figures framed by keyfret bands, set with a pair of silver handles and metal hinges, the interior divided into sections of various boxes and implements

Condition

The top surface of the cover and the base are each carved from three ivory panels, the horizontal seams are visible from both sides a quarter and three-quarters down the top end, filled in with white wax between the gaps. There are minor niblling and minute nicks along the extremities and at the corners of the box. The box is in otherwise very good condition.
