Catalogue Note
The vigorous high relief carving on this vase is particularly fine. The raised and reticulated decoration conforms beautifully with both the form and color of the jade. The phoenix when in company with the dragon connotes the feminine and conveys a wish for benevolence and prosperity. When perched amidst blooming peony, the meaning broadens to include plenitude and righteousness. The addition of the two small doves adds a further wish for fidelity and fertility.
A related example of a white jade vase with chain-linked cover and phoenix decoration from the T.Y. Chao Collection Part I, was sold in our Hong Kong rooms, 18th November 1986, lot 171.
