Catalogue Note
An autograph song by Robert Burns.
This beautiful and much-sung lyric is generally regarded as a "Clarinda" effusion; the grandson of Mrs. McLehose claimed that it was composed in the summer of 1792. But the postmark of the letter which sent this admired song to George Thomson was dated 9 December 1794 and the poet remarks "I have just framed for you the following."
