Description

  • pair of bowls each centred with lion mask
  • gilt répoussé copper

bowl no. 1: with a partially legible paper label inscribed: EDOU;another with Cuivre doré a paper label inscribed: Venise debut XVII ;bowl no. 2: with an illegible paper label

Condition

Overall the condition of the bowls is good. There is considerable dirt to the surfaces, in particular to the interiors and to the feet. The feet and emblemata were cast separately from the bowls. In bowl no. 2 both the foot and emblamata are slightly loose. In both bowls, there is glue around the edges of the feet and at the emblemata frames; presumably to fix the fittings in place. There is wear to the metal surfaces including minor nicks and scratches and wear to the gilding. In bowl no 1, three old drill holes have been filled with a dark metal and three new holes drilled subsequently. There are three similar metal fillings under the foot of bowl no. 2, two of which have new holes.
