Catalogue Note
Max Klinger sculpted his life-size marble Badende in 1896/7. It is now in the collection of the Museum der bildenden Künste, Leipzig. In 1903 Klinger authorised the Gladenbeck foundry to produce editions of the model in various sizes. Many bronze versions are known. The stone versions are much rarer. They were cast using a mixture of marble or alabaster powder and a binding material to simulate marble. One such model, in the same dimensions as the present work, was on loan to the Leipzig museum for several decades.
