Condition

This original terracotta maquette has various original firing cracks, notably around the figure's proper right foot and horizontally through the lower section of drapery on the proper left side. Other fine, hairline firing cracks are visible in the middle of the body, torso and in the face. There is a repair to the proper left elbow which runs across the middle of the figure. There is overall surface dirt. Otherwise the condition of this fresh and dynamic terracotta is very good.

Catalogue Note

This fabulously fresh original terracotta is unrecorded in the oeuvre of Carrier-Belleuse. The shortened form of the signature conforms with the early date of this work. The surface of the terracotta has been worked with deeply incised tool marks which emphasise the tension of the compostion and find some parallels on his smaller bronzes, such as those on the 1862 Tazza in the Victorian & Albert Museum.  It is tempting to see in the lively characterisation of this personification of drama the inspiration of the greatest actress of the time, Mademoiselle Rachel, who died in 1858.  We know that Carrier-Belleuse represented the acclaimed French actress singing the Marseillaise.
